During the last 30 years, I have made more than 10,000 works including sculptures, paintings, drawings, collages, installations, and performances. My aim is to translate thoughts into art through a process of experimentation and exploration. It’s hard to explain why I make art, but I try to surprise myself with new pieces everyday—that’s why I change medium so often. I have always been interested in creativity that comes during downtime like the scrimshaw made by whalers, the embossed hardhats created by oilmen, or even the zippo lighters carved by soldiers. When I make art I feel connected to a human activity that has can be seen from the ice age to the present. Making art feels like a deeply human activity.
